In response to the TF column of Atty. Marco Tomakin
This is in response to Atty. Marco F. G. Tomakin's article in Sunday's newspaper. Read your column today in The FREEMAN newspaper. Let's put things into perspective...immigration needs an overhaul, but to blame immigrants for murder in the US is absurd. The killers of Mollie Tibbetts and Kate Steinle killed one person "so Congress must build a wall."
Stephan Paddock killed 58 and wounded 851 others in the Las Vegas shooting, Devon Kelly killed 26 and wounded 20 black churchgoing people in the Southerland Springs Church shooting, Adam Lanza killed 20 innocent children and an additional three staff and teachers in the Sandy Hook school shooting, but the Congress "must not" act on gun control because the killers were white and the NRA contributes heavily to the Republican party.
It's true that from 2011 to 2016 about 44 percent of the federal prison population was made up of non- citizens, but that's because most immigration offenses are federal crimes.
During that period, more than two-thirds of those non-citizens incarcerated in federal facilities were there for immigration-related offenses.
That same year, the percentage of non-citizens who were federally incarcerated for non-immigration crimes was lower than 1 percent of the national population. So, you do the math. Get your figures correct before condemning immigrants.
My forefathers were American Indian, and African American. To my ancestors, Europe sent over their rapist's, thieves, and criminals on the Mayflower. But, it is time to realize that, this great nation, the USA was built on the backs of the IMMIGRANT.
