Records stumble in CESAFI swimming and athletics

Record breakers shine in the first day of the athletics and swimming events of the 18th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center.

University of Cebu’s Martchan Torregosa was in top form yesterday as he clocked in 51.64 seconds to win the gold medal in the boys 400m event. It was a record breaking performanc­e as he shattered the 11 year record of Fran Navaja of 52 seconds.

His teammate Josie Inemedo also clinched the girls tiara with 1:02.50, clocking.

Other UC bets in Crystal Villanueva (1.45) and Joan Alinsunod (11:26.75) topped the girls high jump and 3,000m event, respective­ly.

Meanwhile, the University of San Carlos-Basic Education athletes dominated five events with Stephen Pekitpekit winning the boys high jump (1.74) and 110m hurdles (15.84); John Joseph Berdin (10.730) and Francine Masendo (8.45) in the boys and girls shot put and Rafael Troy Lugay (11:01.24) in the 3,000m steeple chase.

Sacred-Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Pearl Angeline Abella (16.92) also took the girls 100m hurdles gold.

In the collegiate division, UC snared five gold medals, while USC claimed four gilts.

Over at the CCSC Aquatic Center, tankers from SHS-AdC and UC shattered four records.

SHS-Ateneo’s Lorraine Hann led the record breakers with her 2:45.81 time in the girls 15-17 200m backstroke, eclipsing the 10-year-old record of 2:49.58.

Hann together with teammates Ysis Lois Remedio, Fionna Alcoseba and Sophia Maxine Chua posted a new mark in the girls 15-17 4x100m medley relay with a time of 05:29.01, erasing the previous 05:36.69 mark set by UC in 2009, while the boys squad composed of Joel Martin Tubesa, Joshua Mikhail Tubesa , June Byoung Jeon and Rudson Nino Oliva posted a new record of 2:06:42, breaking UC’s two-year-old record of 2:06:84.

UC girls squad carved a new record in the 15-17 4X100m freestyle courtesy of Bencynt Ghail Luage, Alexa Angel Asibal, Mary Pauline Indaya and Karen Mae Indaya with 4:50:11. —
