UV, UC take on separate foes

-

Two-time defending champions University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers and the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters have different goals in mind as they take on separate foes in the 18th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) men’s basketball tournament today at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Lancers hope to sustain their steady climb on top of the leaderboard when they go up against the giant-slaying Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats in the 5:15 p.m. opener, while the Webmasters will try to bounce back from a stunning loss in their previous games as they battle the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers in the main match at 6:45 p.m.

On a hot comeback trail, the Lancers are unscathed in three games in the second round of elimination to earn a share of second place in the standings with the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars on identical 6-3 win-loss records.

Though heavily favored, the Lancers must be extra careful against the Wildcats, who are coming off back-toback upset victories the most latest against the previously unbeaten Webmasters.

In halting UC’s 8-0 win streak, the Wildcats also scuttled the Webmasters’ bid to gain an outright finals berth.

Still, the Webmasters are ahead of the pack in the collegiate division with a 8-1 slate. They are expected to pull off a repeat peformance over the skidding Panthers, who lost four of their last five games to drop to 5-5.—
