10th Balik-Baroto Regatta a huge success

-

Balik-Baroto Movement chairman David "Kuya Boy" Odilao, Jr. relishes with pride the highly successful staging of their Balik-Baroto Regatta commemmorating their 10th founding anniversary last October 12.

Over 50 marginalized fisherfolks on board their colorful sailboats paddled their way through the grueling four nautical miles race course along the shores of Talisay City starting and ending at Larawan beach resort in Barangay Poblacion, with Talisay's hometown bets Lyndon and Rey Sumalinog emerging as champions.

"Through the course of our decade-long existence, we have organized various meaningful and highlysuccessful events," said Odilao, the acknowleged 'Father of Sinulog'.

"More than the spirit of competition though, the important thing is that we accomplished our goal of having this activity and that is to remind the younger generation of the heritage that our forefathers started and further focus our concern to the marginalized fishermen," he added.

Odilao, on the other hand, extended his profound gratitude to those who, in one way or another, have contributed to the success of their noble undertaking.

Foremost among them are Cebu Governor Hilario 'Jujun' Davided III, Tuburan Mayor Democrito "Aljun" Diamante, Jr. and Philippine Sports Commissioner Ramon Fernandez.

Odilao said they are now focusing on their next big event in Limasawa next year. Tey will also work it out with

Fernandez to make this boat race a recreational sport that will be promoted by PSC not only for adults but also for kids. —
