Tom’s aid needed for relocation of Buhisan folks

- Leyson/GAN

Buhisan Barangay Captain Gremar Barete will ask the help of Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña to finalize the relocation site of at least 29 affected households in Sitio Sandayong.

Yesterday, Barete told The FREEMAN that he will talk with the mayor along with the Division for the Welfare of the Urban Poor (DWUP) on how to proceed with the relocation site of the affected residents.

Recently, the barangay has identified two areas in Sitio Dulhugan and Sitio Tubod which are ideal to build the new structures of the affected residents.

“Wala pa’y timeline when gyud ma-finalize ang relocation site kay makigmeeting pako sa DWUP and Mayor Tommy,” Barete said.

Last week, the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CCDRRMO) and Mines and Geosciences Bureau-7 held a re-evaluation activity at Sitio Sandayong after cracks caused by the 7.2 magnitude earthquake in 2013 have become evident.

Even though the CCDRRMO preferred not to reveal their assessment since it is subject for confirmation of the MGB-7, the committee on disaster risk reduction management and climate change adaptation recommended for the relocation of the residents.

Also, the CCDRRMO will inspect this week the identified relocation site to check whether or not it is safe for habituation.

He said 80 percent of the identified affected residents are willing to be relocated after they were informed of the current situation in the area recently.

Last Saturday, Buhisan barangay officials led by Barete and CCDRRMO held a meeting with the constituents.

“Eighty-percent na ang willing ma-relocate, maandam lang ang relocation site,” Barete said.

It was the initiative of the barangay to meet the residents because majority of them were uncooperative earlier.

Barete said that with the help of the CCDRRMO, they have installed warning signs in the identified landslide prone areas in Sitio Sandayong as their precautionary measures.

Meanwhile, he is hopeful that the MGB7 can issue an updated recommendation this week so that they can implement it immediately.
