Didal wins US skating tourney
Success just kept on flowing Margielyn Didal's way.
The Cebuana skateboard sensation added feather on her cap after grabbing the top honors of the Exposure AllWomen Skateboarding Championships 2018 yesterday at the Encinitas Community Park in San Diego, California.
Didal pocketed $7,000 (Php350,000) for stamping her class in the world’s largest skateboarding event for women.
She bested 30 other contenders from eight countries to lord it over the pro street skate, the same event where she produced a historic gold medal for the Philippines in the Asian Games two months ago in Indonesia.
In the finals, Didal outclassed Poe Pinson of the United States as Japan’s Isa Kaya settled for bronze. Didal's fellow countryman Christiana Means landed at a decent fifth place.
Didal's US trip was made possible through the support of New Balance Numeric, her major corporate backer.
“It’s a great day for the Filipinos in skateboarding,” said New Balance Numerics Asia Pacific brand manager Anthony Claravall.
Didal will stay in the US for further training preparatory for the Skate Exchange in Tokyo, Japan on December 1. Afterwhich, the proud daughter of a carpenter and 'kwek-kwek' vendor from Barangay Lahug, Cebu City will return to the Philippines for another big event.
Didal though might not be able to spend Christmas in Cebu as she is set to go back to the US to train for the Street League, a 2020 Tokyo Olympics qualifier scheduled this January in Brazil. —
