Capitol to lease facilities for women, children

In order to earn additional funds, the Cebu Provincial Government will lease two unused properties that are constructed on the lot that Capitol owns.

The Cebu Provincial Women and Children Development Center (CPWCDC) at Sitio Sudlon, Barangay Lahug, Cebu City and the Cebu Provincial Skills Training Center (CPSTC) in Barangay Inayagan, Naga City are the two facilities the province wants to lease.

The CPWCDC is a facility for women and children who are victims of abuse and violence, while the CPSTC used to be the training center for massage therapy, beauty parlor, dress making and tailoring.

Governor Gwen Garcia wants the work and responsibility of the CPWCDC and the one in My Home Center in Barangay Tayud, Consolacion that is a facility for those Children in Conflict with the Law (CICL) be turned over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

These facilities were some of the projects that the previous administration, through then Vice Governor Agnes Magpale, was focusing on.

Magpale was Garcia’s opponent in the gubernatorial race in the last elections.

Garcia said the provincial government spends about P375,000 per child annually at the children’s facility that would cover the salary of the house parents as well for the children’s needs.

At the Women and Development Center, on the other end, Capitol reportedly shells out P200,000.

“We may have funds for it, but I’d rather that these be spent on more costeffective and expansive manner nga mas daghan. The greater good for the greater number, not to a selected few,” Garcia said.

“You know we are not even spending P1,000 for every child in the far flung towns and barangays. That P375,000 will go a long way to help other children. Murag naay inequity ba. For me, it’s an injustice for the rest of the children that we also need to take care of,” Garcia added.

More than 11 children who are staying at My Home and about 20 beneficiaries at the Women and Development Center were asked to go home during the last week of September. —
