The Cebu City Council has requested Mayor Edgardo Labella to engage, tap, or partner with local engineers to help design foot-pedal hand wash facilities that will be placed in strategic locations in barangays and in all city government offices.

The design or blueprint can also be made available to critical care facilities and private establishments that wish to build and install the same in their premises to help prevent the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Councilor Alvin Dizon has sponsored a resolution on the hand wash facility that the City Council last Friday approved.

“The private sector, especially our engineers, can be tapped by the City Government to help design the foot-pedal hand wash facilities and distribute the design to the public especially to our barangays, critical care facilities, private establishments, among others,” said Dizon.

He added that given the widespread community transmission and the continued spike of COVID-19 cases in the city’s barangays, it is necessary to establish or strengthen hand hygiene practices.

Dizon said it is also important to ensure or make an accessible facility for people to practice proper hand hygiene and be constantly reminded of its importance in preventing the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

He added innovative hand hygiene stations using foot-pedal hand wash facilities is one way to reduce the need for contact.

Proper hand hygiene is one of the health and safety measures prescribed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Department of Health (DOH) to reduce the spread of COVID-19. This is along with the mandatory and proper wearing of facemasks, physical distancing, and consistent disinfection of common-touched surfaces. —
