Animal welfare desk in police stations eyed

- Mary Ruth R.

The Cebu City government is planning to put up an animal welfare desk in the city’s police stations.

Dr. Jessica Maribojoc, officer-in-charge of the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Fisheries (DVMF), said that this is among her proposals to the City Council’s Committee on Animal Welfare so that an ordinance will be crafted regarding the matter.

The Committee on Animal Welfare is the newest addition to the standing committees at the City Council. It is chaired by Vice Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia.

Maribojoc said she is glad with such development because it will speed up the formulation of rules or procedures for the protection of animals, and one of them is the animal welfare desk that she proposes to be established at the police stations.

“Nindot ang maong pamaagi kay mas madali na ang pagpasaka og reklamo alang sa mga nang-abusar og mga hayop kay kahibalo naman sila kon asa sila modiretso og dangop,” said Maribojoc, adding that animals should not be abused as they also have lives.

“Kun magbuhi gani ta og mga iro o ba kaha iring, hatagan nato sila og saktong pag-atiman ug dili nato sila pasagdan. Atong isipon nga part na sila sa atong family,” she added.

If the proposed animal welfare desk pushes through, the individuals who will be involved in the operation will also undergo orientation and training.

Meanwhile, the city government, through DVMF, will be holding an “Asong Pinoy Day” on July 17, 2022 at the Plaza Sugbu, where they will provide different services to dogs, and even cats.

This will be the 12th year of the celebration for the Asong Pinoy (Aspin).

Maribojoc said that Aspins deserve to be looked after, and that they have a lot of respect for individuals who raise such kind of dogs. — Malinao/FPL
