Motorists in Cebu City are reminded to observe the speed limit at all times to avoid accidents and being fined.

The Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO) issued the reminder following an accident along S. Osmeña Avenue in the North Reclamation Area the other day.

"Kun magpadagan kita sa saktong gikusgon, atong malikayan ang disgrasya sa kadalanan," reads a statement from CCTO.

The traffic office said that over speeding is prohibited under City Ordinance 2612. The ordinance sets the maximum speed limit within the city’s thoroughfares. Under the ordinance, all vehicles should not exceed 60 KpH (Kilometer per Hour) on major roads (national primary or secondary roads) or "Open Roads" and 20 KpH on Barangay Roads (crowded streets).

The penalties include P2,000 fine for the first offense; P2,500 for the second offense; and P3,000.00 for the third offense and impoundment of the vehicle. Violators will be obliged to undergo a four-hour seminar.

CCTO said it is important to observe traffic rules at all times to help ease traffic congestion and avoid accidents.

The city's traffic department also advised the public to follow traffic signs as it intensifies their campaign not only against over speeding but illegal parking as well. CCTO has already calibrated their speed guns to ensure that over speeding drivers will be apprehended.

Campaign against illegal parking violators will also be intensified to clear the streets from obstructions.

Keeping the streets free from obstruction is one of the priority projects of the city government to achieve Mayor Michael Rama’s vision of a Singapore-like city.
