Sibuyan Mining Issue: Facebook weaponized to attack environmental defenders
Since September 2022 we have been reporting fake accounts and pages of non-existing organizations to Facebook. The social media giant kept mum and has sustained their activities. Facebook may also be held accountable in continuously cuddling non-existent persons and agents of companies attacking environmental defenders and twisting facts.
We call on Facebook and Meta to be catalysts for social good not for hatred and disinformation. We call on the mining company to stop this dirty strategy and not hide behind fake accounts. Sibuyanons and environmental defenders are contemplating to file an appropriate class suit against Facebook for being an accessory to proven illegal activities of the mining company, becoming a platform to spread twisted facts and disinformation, blackmails and threats.
We strongly urge the Senate to summon Facebook and
Meta in the Senate inquiry on Sibuyan Island mining issue proposed by Senator Risa Hontiveros.
Created in August 2022, pseudo media organizations' pages with their minions of trolls and fake accounts are the following: Romblon YoungTrepreneurs, Good News Romblon, Discover Pilipinas, Arangkada Pilipinas, Solid Sibuyan Romblon, Aksyon Sibuyan, and Romblon News Today.
Affiliated pages are the following: Asenso sa Negosyo Pilipinas, Balitang Visayas, and Solid North News.
A shared post of environmentalist Rodne Galicha has been attacked by trolls through the comments section. Another post of the Alliance of Students Against Mining has received troll comments.
