THE SEVEN FORMS OF ART

Painting/Visual Art

As one of the seven forms of art, painting/visual art is a twodimensional artform that entails the utilization/application of paints/ illustration materials to render illusion of structure and form on surfaces.

It has long stood out as a strong influence in the creative arts field throughout history, and is considered to be distinct as a form of non-temporal art or art that does not require the passing of time to be fully understood.

Sculpture

Akin to painting, sculpture is a timeless creative practice that entails the creation of structure and form in three-dimensional modes.

Sculpture techniques include modeling, casting, assembling and carving using practically any type of medium, though the most popular would include marble, wood, copper and bronze. Like painting/visual art, it is also identified as a distinct form of non-temporal art.

Cinema

Widely considered to be the most recent of the seven forms, cinema (or film making) is generalized as the art that incorporates other forms of art.

More than just visuals and sound, it works with different forms in molding an understandable take on the concepts of symbolism, theme, setting, subjects and points of view.

Architecture

Widely characterized as the art of structures, the creative discipline in architecture sets it as a mode of creative communication that can serve as a cultural aesthetic and promote ideological functions.

Music

As an artform, music entails the process of arranging of audible sounds and vibrations to create a composition that incorporates the elements of melody, harmony and rhythm.

It is unique in the sense that it is neither an object or a visual experience, since the arrangement of sound in time is what makes it art. It is the most prime example of temporal art, since the passing of time is required for music to make sense.

Literature

For centuries, literature has been taken as a form of art that ambivalently records, entertains and informs.

It is essentially an art form of language that’s set on imparting knowledge, information or stories, and it covers a wide variety of written works such as poems, essays, novels, biographies/ autobiographies, non-fiction books and even the scripts of plays and movie screenplays.

Theater

Visual elements and dramatic performances are the touchstone markers that’s definitive in theatrical performances.

It is a type of temporal art since it requires the passing of time for audiences to appreciate, and it also encompasses a variety of modes such as stage plays, musicals, puppet shows, variety shows, magic shows and, to a certain extent, stand-up comedy acts.
