March’s Health Observances

- By: Yasunari Ramon Suarez Taguchi

As with most months, March is host to a range of health awareness campaigns that’re dedicated to spread valuable information on different medical conditions, in a bid to make people aware of the warning signs of at-times life-threatening afflictions. These observances subscribe to the wisdom in the saying “a pinch of prevention is a pound of solution”, and they essentially frame the month as a time when various activities, information drives and educational campaigns on different diseases and conditions take place.

Here’s a roundup on some of the many health-and-awareness-related observances that’re happening this month.

Endometriosis Awareness Month

Endometriosis is a disorder in which tissue that resembles the uterine lining is found in other parts of the body, primarily in the abdominal cavity. Although it has been mentioned in medical writings that date back to 4,000 years, Karl von Rokitansky made the first microscopical discovery of it in 1860.

Experts note that one in ten women each year are impacted by this illness. Generally, the condition can result in uncomfortable symptoms that include heavy menstrual periods, pain during and/or after sex, pain in the lower abdomen and intestines, among others.

In a bid to spread information about the condition, there are several websites that focus on its impact and effect on women, apart from providing pertinent information on care and treatment.

Endometriosis.com would be one such site that was built as a global platform wherein women from all over the world can gain updates about ongoing research and treatment developments about the disease. The website of the non-profit EndoMarch organization would be another, as it stands by the organization’s fundraising inclinations in hosting a variety of information drives and campaigns to support medical research on the condition.
