City set to make another Guinness record attempt
Cebu City is making another attempt at the Guinness World Record, this time in gymnastics.
The city government through the Cebu City Sports Commission and its gymnastic academy, together with Department of EducationCebu City and the Local School Board(LSB), will aim for the largest rhythmic gymnastics’ hula hoops workout in the world.
Based on GWR’s website, the largest hula hoop workout consisted of 537 people and was achieved by Dottie Woods (UK) in Romsey, United Kingdom on 15 October 2017.
“The attempt took place at “The Great Hooping for Happiness” which was organized to raise the profile of MacMillan Cancer Support,” according to the website.
In 2018, there was also another GWR for the most people dancing with hula hoops simultaneously with 965 people achieved by Virutcham International Public School CBSE in Tamil Nadu, India.
There are also other hoop-related records that the Cebu City government may also consider breaking.
Boosting Cebu City’s latest attempt is the use of improvised hoops made of PVC designed by Architect Dondon Sombrio.
Sombrio, a former national archer and archery official, also designed the improvised bow in Cebu City’s successful attempt at the largest archery tournament.
The Philippine Sports Commission(PSC) headed by Dickie Bachmann fully supports the latest GWR attempt of the city.
Former CCSC chair and now PSC Commissioner Edward Hayco said he hopes such attempt will stir young Cebuanos to go into gymnastics, especially in the public schools.
Launched late last week at the Labangon Elementary School, the 12 schools for sports here will be the core of the upcoming GWR attempt.
With at least two thousand participants for the attempt to break the current GWR record, the event will either take place at the Cebu City Sports Center or at the South Road Properties.
CCSC’s Bernard Ricablanca said they already communicated with Guinness for the event and are waiting for the registration number.
Unlike before the pandemic, Ricablanca said it now takes at least six months for Guinness to verify the information for those intending to make world record attempts. This is because a lot of countries, groups and individuals are also hoping to get a GWR.
Ricablanca also said, up to now, they are still even awaiting the official certification of a GWR for the largest archery tournament.
Aside from archery, CCSC was also able to stir the city to a GWR record for the largest dance class and largest chess tournament some years ago.
