Beauty and Style Trends
From Fashion Week That’re Foreseen to Go Big
In as much as the fineries and accessories crafted by globally famed marquees and designers are the stars every time New York Fashion Week rolls around, a supporting role has been played by stylistic takes on trendy hair, nails and makeup couture. Last month’s staging of the Fall 2023 edition of New York Fashion Week was no exception to this norm, and here is a roundup on the different beauty and style trends that got the attention of many in various NYFW shows – trends which are portended gain traction in the months to come.
“Braid Piercings”
Like thread hair accessories, “braid piercings” are staples in festival and cosplay dressing, and in the most recent NYFW, these items played a role in tempering an old-school-made-new-school feel in a number of runway shows.
The House of Mua Mua, for one, amped-up the looks of its models in using jewelry pieces as “braid piercings”, which resulted to bombastic looks that harp on the carefree vibe of the 90s.
Thread Accessories for Hair
A fixture in cosplay and festival party dressing ideals, threads as hair accessories proved to be a hit among attendees of the most recent NYFW, as observed by several fashion pundits present at the event.
The idea behind this beauty trend isn’t that hard to grasp: add some fun and zany zing to hairstyles by accessorizing them with threadbased accessories that work well with either braided or non-braided looks.
Twisted Buns
Novel takes on the traditional twisted bun were noticed by fashion pundits among NYFW attendees and runways.
“Rough” and “polished” iterations of the hairstyle were formed by the hairstylists of the runway shows of Badgley Mischka, Tia Adeola and Christian Siriano, and these alluded to just how versatile twisted buns could be.
Microbangs
Also known as “baby bangs”, microbangs were quite a hit among NYFW attendees, with several stylists noting that their popularity stems from the “versatile transitional state” that the hairstyle gifts to those who sport it.
Microbangs, after all, can add an extra umph to a wide variety of cuts, which includes pixie cuts, long cuts, short cuts, box braids, curly cuts, pin straight cuts and more.
Patterned French Manicures
Patterned French manicures were widely observed by stylists in NYFW among its attendees and runway models, so much so that the nail style trend has been described as a marker for 2023 fashion this early on.
Though the French manicure has long been a favorite across generations of fashionistas, the patterned iteration of the style is foreseen to be a popular option that can interchangeably work well with different looks.
Cow-Print Manicures
“Cow-print manicures” were seen as the subtle nail style option that matches with a mix of prints without going over the top in last month’s NYFW.
At one point a fixture in Y2K aesthetics (particularly in denim sides and phone cases), interest in cowprints as a nail art style is attributed to be an offshoot from the fashion sphere’s prevailing love for retrorevival themes.
Half-Moon Glitter Manicures
Developed by nail polish brand Essie, the “half-moon” nail art style is one which has the polish at the cuticle to one side different from the rest of what’s on the nail.
Luxury womenswear brand Markarian had several of its models sport the nail art style in its runway show with a twist: designs were made unique with polish-and-glitter blends.
Diffused Lips
The “diffused lips” look features slightly faded and blended edges, which results to an ambivalently soft-yet-bold-atthe-same-time effect when taken in full.
Though lined lips styles were popular on runway shows, the look did have a number of models sport it to a point that it managed to stand out.
The Floating Eyeliner Look
Also referred to as the “invisible eyeliner” look, iterations of the floating eyeliner look was observed by fashion pundits being sported by NYFW attendees and models.
Molded from the fashion sphere’s predilection for minimalist styles, the look works well in accentuating one’s natural eye shape and provide a shade of color that can be used to complement one’s outfit.
The Indie Sleaze Look
An offshoot from the grunge era and argued to be its cleaner, toned-down version, the “indie sleaze” look worked well with the retro-inclinations of fashion brands L’agence and Alice and Olivia.
The looks’ most definitive trait? The sleptin eyeliner effect, matched with faded-but-meant-tolook-that-way lips.
