Safety measures in subdivision proposed

Cebu City Councilor Rey Gealon will ask colleagues at the City Council to request Monterrazas Subdivision in Barangay Guadalupe to install safety measures along its roads to prevent untoward incidents.

This came after a road mishap killed two persons and injured two others inside the subdivision last Tuesday.

In a proposed resolution Gealon, who is also the City’s Traffic Management Coordination Committee (TMCC) head, said the subdivision could install humps, rumble strips, or any traffic speed reducer devices.

He said the measures could help reduce the risk of accidents, as they provide both “visual and physical warning” for drivers to slow down.

Gealon also said traffic speed reducer devices can be particularly important in residential areas where there are vulnerable road users.

Last Jan. 16, a van that allegedly lost its brakes while going downhill rammed into four motorcycles as well as a pedestrian inside the subdivision, resulting in the death of two people and injury to two others.

“Ug naa pa unta ning mga speed reducer, devices or installations, sama sa humps or rubber strips, maminusan unta ang gikusgon sa sakyanan nga gikan sa babaw pagdulhog sa ubos,” Gealon told reporters yesterday.

“Supposedly, magapply na ka’g brakes aning mga mga higayona nga kining padulhog kaayo, lawom kaayo. Wa man lagi na, so mao na atong nakita sa habig sa traffic,” he added

Gealon said he personally surveyed the area and observed the absence of safety measures, which could have helped saved the lives of the two victims.

“Kahibaw man ta sa lugar, sa atong pagtan-aw lawom gyud kaayo gikan sa babaw. Inig mudulhog na, kung mawad-an ka’g brake dira, lahos gyud ka sa mga balay,” he said.

His proposed resolution also “encouraged” officials of Brgy. Guadalupe, to install bollards before the sidewalks as preventive measures.

The City Council will tackle his proposed resolution next week.
