Webmasters, Mustangs advance to Sinulog Cup main tournament

-

The University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters and the Cebu Roosevelt Memorial Colleges (CRMC) Mustangs booked tickets to the Sinulog Cup 2024 Basketball Tournament set for January 23-27 at the Cebu City Sports Institute (CCSI) gym in Barangay Sawang Calero.

This after the Webmasters and the Mustangs topped the fourday qualifying round staged last January 16-19 featuring seven teams from the Ce bu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc .( CE SA F I ).

Steven Ursal and Ricofer Sordilla led a balanced attack with 10 points each as the Webmasters pummeled the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, 82-59, while Redjhee Recimiento and Josiah Roa tallied 13 markers apiece as the Mustangs reasserted their dominance over the Southwestern University (SWU)-Phinma Cobras, 70-60.

The Webmasters lost an early 21-11 lead, enabling the Jaguars to threaten at 37-40 with halfway through the third period but the C ES AF I Season 23 first runner-up quickly re grouped and dropped a devastating 42-22 bomb to pulverize USJ-R by 23 points.

In other game, the Cobras nailed the game’s first three points but the Mustangs charged back with finesse to take full control of the match since closing the first half with a 35-31 edge, which they padded to nine, 59-50, after the third quarter.

A7-0 blast early in the final stretch gave the Mustangs their biggest advantage at 14 points, 68-54. The Cobras responded with six straight points to pull within eight, 60-68, but that was all the best they could muster.

In the Sinulog Cup, the Webmasters and the Mustangs will be tested against the top commercial ballclubs in the Visayas and Mindanao region.

The Webmasters are in Bracket A together with defending champion EGS, Team Khalifa of Tacloban City, and the United Negros Basketball League (UNBL) of Bacolod City.

The Mustangs will have their hands full in Bracket B against the Chase Tower Runs of Chase Cokaliong, OCCCI-Ormoc Sheermasters, and Znars Jewerly of Marawi City, Lanao del Sur.

They will play a single round robin, with the top two in each bracket advancing to the crossover semifinals.

The winners will then figure in a sudden-death title clash.

The champion will take home P150,000. The first runner-up will pocket P100,000, while the third and fourth placers will receive P50,000 and P25,000, respectively. --
