An erosion of values

-

Some people just like to play with fire. On the night of January 26, a man and his alleged mistress were arrested and detained after they were caught checking into a hotel along Hernan Cortes St., Mandaue City.

It turns out the man, 41 years old, was serving as a barangay councilman in Cebu City. His wife earlier sought help from Mandaue City Police Station 4 after she followed her husband then saw him check into the hotel.

Two days later in San Fernando town, police arrested a man after finding him and his lover in a lodging house in Barangay Pitalo.

It was his wife who went to the police seeking help after recognizing his motorcycle parked outside the lodging house. It was last year yet when she started harboring suspicions her husband, 38 years old, was having an affair after he wouldn’t allow her to see his cellphone anymore.

We don’t want to be preachy or to dwell on the private affairs --in this case, literally-- of private individuals. However, we would also like to highlight that an erosion of moral values is something that should not be taken lightly.

Most married men are fathers, and for them to engage in such behavior isn’t setting a good example for their children. The fact that the man involved in the first case mentioned above also happens to be an elected official is more condemnable, shall we say.

Of course it takes two to tango; women who choose to engage in such behavior are also not good examples for their children or others.

The family is still the basic unity of society. Any kind of loose behavior that tends to weaken this basic unit will have disastrous results. While these results may not be immediately visible they may take shape somewhere down the road, most likely when kids who have been made aware of such behavior now have families of their own.

And if the supposedly-sacred institution of marriage can be compromised, what else can be?

We live in a time when some virtues are no longer held as sacred as before and when some when commitments are no longer seen as binding. We should do everything we can to at least be good examples to our children and to others.
