February’s Foodie Slate of Affairs
By: Yasunari Ramon Suarez Taguchi Keen on staying on top of February’s “foodie slate of affairs”? Here’s a roundup of the many food-related trends and observances that’re traditionally observed in the month – events that set a novel spark into the month’s foodie jaunts and adventures. World Nutella Day | February 5
First observed in 2007, World Nutella Day is a foodie-oriented holiday that’s observed every February 5.
Essentially a day that brings attention to different Nutella recipes, it was conceptualized by a blogger named Sara Rosso, who describes herself as a “Nutella enthusiast”.
Nutella is a type of spread that’s flavored with hazelnut and cocoa. It was first introduced in Italy in 1964, and the product has since gained a following throughout the world – so much so that Cebu went through a “Nutella craze” in the past ten years or so.
This year’s observance of the day is quite special, as it is timed with the celebration of Nutella’s 60th year.
World Pulses Day | February 10
Observed annually every February 10, World Pulses Day is one of few foodie-oriented bespoke holidays that was formalized by the United Nations.
Essentially a day that recognizes the nutritional benefits of pulses – AKA legumes – the day was institutionalized by the UN in 2018 as a way to acknowledge that pulses can contribute to the development of sustainable food systems, thereby contribute to the eradication of world hunger and poverty.
The decision to recognize a day for pulses is part of the UN’s strategies to achieve its 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which aims to foster world peace and enrich food security.
The edible seeds of plants that yield pods, such as dry peas, dry beans, lupins, lentils, and chickpeas, are referred to as pulses or legumes. Pulses come in a wide range of sizes, forms and colors, and they are a staple in different types of cuisines.
Let’s All Eat Right Day | February 25
Let’s All Eat Right Day is basically a day that enjoins everyone to commit to eating right and healthy.
It is observed every February 25 to commemorate the birthday of nutritionist Adelle Davis, who famously came up with the saying-cumprinciple “Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper”.
Though it is unclear when exactly the day was initiated, the day was largely established to put people on a lifelong path of developing healthier eating habits.
