Farmers facing challenges, losing interest

Farmers in Cebu City are facing challenges on production while others are losing interest in farming entirely, said the chairman of the Committee on Agriculture Councilor Jun Alcover.

Last Monday morning, various crops and local produce were displayed at the Plaza Sugbo Grounds during its “Agri-Fishery Meat Products Display Fair” in line with the 87th Charter Day Celebration, but not all was good in agriculture sector, according to Alcover.

In an interview, Alcover said the fair was intended to pay respect and tribute to the farmers of Cebu City by showcasing their local produce that can be bought at a lower price. It was also an avenue to encourage other farmers to continue their plans in food production.

However, Alcover also admitted that among the major problems being faced by the local farmers is low production which leads to a higher price of produce.

“Wa kasabot ang mga tawo nga nagkahilis atong mga mag uuma, nawad-an og interest atong katawhan sa pag uma, kay wa na may support na klaro,” said Alcover.

As chairman, Alcover said he crafted an ordinance that will grant full scholarship to children of farmers or those who may want to pursue an agricultural course.

The said ordinance will grant full scholarship and will also shoulder transportation and accommodation to students.

“Kay karon, tiguwang na atong mga mag-uuma unya mao nay problema nato. Nagkahilis atong mga mag-uuma, wa nay mananom, if wa nay mananom, unsa may atong makaon?” said Alcover.

In line with this, Alcover also passed an ordinance that encourages City Hall employees to plant crops and learn more about urban gardening through a People’s Farm.
