City to assist scholarship seekers to get TESDA aid
Cebu City Councilor Dondon Hontiveros has assured that assistance will still be provided to applicants who failed to meet requirements for the scholarship funded by the city government.
In a recent event celebrating the Urban Development and Housing Act Month at Plaza Sugbo, Hontiveros grabbed the chance to discuss the City’s scholarship program and explained that for those who will not be accepted into the program, they should not feel bad as they will still be provided help.
Hontiveros said that the City's Scholarship Program Office, together with his office, will continue to assist those that failed to meet the requirements to get a chance to get a scholarship through the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and through his own foundation, the DH25 Foundation.
Last year, Hontiveros said they were able to endorse 125 students to TESDA for on-the-job training, and some were hired by the company they trained for.
Hontiveros stressed that TESDA is a huge help as they are the one that issues the skills certification needed when applying for a technical job, especially those planning to work abroad.
City Councilor Rey Gealon also urged the College Scholarship Program Office to actively promote courses offered at TESDA to scholars of the city government.
This came after TESDA-7 earlier said TESDA's Technical Vocational Education Training (TVET) programs can help, not only in employability, but as a pathway to career advancement. However, Gealon also noted that only a few scholars in the City have knowledge of the availability of the TVET programs.
With this, Gealon filed a resolution before the City Council for the Cebu City Scholarship Program in collaboration with TESDA-7 “to conduct an information campaign on TESDA's TVET programs to the city's scholars to inform and advise them on its availability, as well as the kind of program they can join that are aligned to the needs of the industry that they intend to work at, as the city scholars would greatly benefit the assistance from both Cebu City Scholarship Program and TESDA”. -
