Wenceslao keeps unbeaten ARQ streak with WBF welterweight belt strap around his waist
Rodel “The Hulk” Wenceslao kept on flying high under the wings of Cebu’s ARQ Gym.
In a dominant show of punching skills,. Wenceslao scored a methodical sixth round stoppage of his fellow countryman Ernie Sanchez of General Santos City in the main event of ARQ Sports Promotions’ “Engkwentro 12:Binombahay sa Cawayan” on Friday night, March 8, at the jampacked Cawayan Sports Complex in Cawayan, Masbate.
Aside from extending his unblemished slate to 7-0 since he hooked up with ARQ nearly two years ago, the pride of Kananga, Leyte also snared the World Boxing Foundation (WBF) Australasian welterweight crown.
“Wala gyud ko magdali nga maknockout siya. Ang ako lang modaog ko sa puntos matag round,” said Wenceslao, who now holds a 21-19-2 record dotted with 10KOs.
Wenceslao’s first ever belt in his career is certainly a huge confidence booster as he hopes to barrel his way towards a world title shot someday.
“Siyempre lipay kaayo ko kay sukad sa akong pagsulod sa ARQ niadtong 2022, straight akong daog sa pito na ka away,” said Wenceslao. “Dako akong kalipay ilabi na kay nadaog nako ang WBF title. Mapasalamaton kaayo ko sa ARQ Boxing ilabi na sa among promoter ug manager nga si sir Jason Arquisola nga iya ko gihatagan ani nga oportunidad,” he continued.
The 30-year-old Wenceslao was doubly happy as his ARQ stablemates also emerged victorious under the guidance of head trainer Eldo Apawan Cortes and conditioning coach Roger Justine Potot who worked closely for all of them at their corner.
Bryx “The King” Piala (9-1, 3KOs) prevailed by unanimous decision over Ken Jordan of GenSan, while Yerroge Gura edged Kier Clenton Espere also via unanimous verdict.
The undefeated Berland “The Triggerman” Robles (10-0-1, 4KOs), however, fought to a stalemate with former world title challenger Robert “Inggo” Paradero.
The bout was ruled as a technical draw as Paradero was unable to continue due to a nasty cut on his head caused by an accidental clash of heads.
In the other match, Angelus Pilapil of Cebu City eked out a split decision win over Masbate’s homegrown talent Mark Sabang. -
