SiKU YA WAZAZi

-

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, both mothers and fathers are honored every August 1 in a public holiday called Siku ya Wazazi. Basically, the day is all about honoring the roles that’re played by mothers and fathers in society, apart from drawing focus and attention to the significance and importance of family values.

Apart from honoring parents, the day is also one which honors a family’s ancestors. Typically, the day starts with families going to cemeteries and cleaning the graves of their deceased relatives, which is followed by children giving of gifts and presents to their parents.
