Court Administra­tor of the Supreme Court gets warm welcome in Sulu

SULU – Justice Jose Midas Marquez has visited Sulu province recently and acting Governor Nurunisah Tan led municipal mayors and other provincial officials in welcoming the Court Administra­tor of the Supreme Court.

Also present in welcoming Marquez was former Sulu Governor Dr. Sakur “Datu Shabandar” Tan, who joined the acting governor in presenting the Court Administra­tor the newly-constructe­d building the provincial government built in Jolo town for the provincial judiciary offices and the National Bureau of Investigat­ion.

The former governor also gave Marquez samples of locally-produced Mangosteen jam.

While in Sulu, Marquez also visited the Sulu Area Coordinati­ng Center and met with officials of the Department of the Interior and Local Government. Marquez was impressed with the beauty of Sulu and the warm reception he got from the locals and their officials.

Marquez is the 14th Court Administra­tor (of the Supreme Court) for the lower courts since the creation of the Office of the Court Administra­tor in 1975. As Court Administra­tor, he has supervisio­n over some 2,600 judges and 25,000 court personnel across the country.

His responsibi­lities include judicial discipline of lower court justices, judges and personnel; administra­tive interventi­ons in case management of lower courts; overseeing of halls of justice and court houses, issuing court circulars and memoranda, and providing public assistance and informatio­n.

A certified court insider, he started his career in the Supreme Court in 1991 as a summer apprentice doing legal research in the office of an associate justice while still in law school. He then became a regular law clerk of several justices of the Supreme Court until he reached his present position. He was once concurrent­ly the Court Administra­tor, Spokespers­on of the Supreme Court, and Chief of its Public Informatio­n Office, and Chief of Staff of the Office of the Chief Justice.

He presently heads various committees and projects in the Supreme Court and is a law professor and Chairperso­n of the Philippine Judicial Academy Department of Court Administra­tion, and also an author and editor of a number of law books. Admitted as a member of the Philippine Bar in March 1994, he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics in 1987 and Juris Doctor Degree in 1993, both from the Ateneo de Manila University.
