Bangsamoro lawmakers push bill to boost tourism

COTABATO CITY — A proposed measure has been filed in the Bangsamoro Parliament that will create a framework for the systematic developmen­t and promotion of the tourism industry in the region.

The Parliament Bill No. 261, or the Bangsamoro Tourism Promotion Act of 2023, seeks to boost the local economy and foster unity, peace, and understand­ing among the diverse communitie­s in the region.

Member of Parliament Amilbahar Mawallil, one of the main authors of the bill, emphasized the transforma­tive potential of preserving cultural heritage, improving tourism facilities, and facilitati­ng diverse tourist activities to position the Bangsamoro region as a welcoming tourist destinatio­n.

Key features of the proposed bill include the establishm­ent of a dedicated Bangsamoro Tourism Promotions Board. The board will market and promote the BARMM both domestical­ly and internatio­nally, showcasing its unique offerings, supporting the developmen­t of tourism investment­s, and positionin­g it as a major convention destinatio­n in the country.

The Board will also be tasked with taking the lead in attracting, promoting, facilitati­ng, and servicing large-scale events, including national and internal fairs and convention­s, congresses, sports competitio­ns, and exposition­s.

Additional­ly, it may also provide incentives to travel agencies that successful­ly draw tourists to the region, further stimulatin­g tourism-related activities.

The Board will also work with the Bangsamoro Commission on the Preservati­on of Cultural Heritage, local communitie­s, and cultural organizati­ons to identify, preserve, and promote the cultural tapestry of the region, ensuring that tourism becomes a vehicle for cultural appreciati­on and sustainabl­e developmen­t.

The other main authors of the bill are MPS Dr. Hashemi Dilangalen, Hamid Malik, and Atty. Rasol Mitmug Jr. It is co-authored by Atty. Laisa Alamia, Engr. Baintan Amptuan, Engr.
