What’s the craziest or coolest thing you’ve done for love?

- By MONS ROMULO

Love can turn one’s wo r ld around. They say when one is in love, it can make he or she a better person and in a snap it can also bring out the worst in us. Love can make us do things we have never imagined doing in our lives and it can inspire us to bring out the best in us. Read on as some friends share with us the craziest or coolest thing they’ve ever done for love.

QC Councilor Candy Medina Atienza

I think the coolest thing I did for love is surprising my husband in every possible way. I’m a huge fan of surprises, that’s why I make sure to craft one for him annually. Having his old pals and relatives over makes the party more fun and I also get to know more about my husband through the stories of his friends.

If there is one thing I know it’s being crazy in love. When I fall in love I don’t just give some of me; I give all of me! I could write a book of the different ways I went crazy over love. One of the first signs of craziness was when I was not even 18 years old, very much a nerd and a total homebody. I signed up for a camping assignment hours from my clean, neat warm neighborhood in Concord, California. Not because I was fond of camping, but because one of the camp volunteers was my all-time crush. So, I, too, volunteered and after a close call with a grizzly bear, poison ivy and freezing temperatures — not to mention having to share a bathroom with 12 other people — I finally got the nerve to face my fears and tell this girl how I felt. So during a very cold wet morning drenched in that stuff that is almost snow, I went to her cabin. I took a deep breath, knocked on the door and... her boyfriend answered. Enough said. I went home depressed, defeated covered in hives and rashes and having not showered in almost four days. What made this crazy was not just the obvious, but this was the day I first dabbled in songwriting. Fast forward to today. After I recorded my first album as a professional singer here in the Philippines, who do you think got the first copy? Is that crazy or what?

Dating my husband long distance for 10 years is both the craziest and coolest thing I’ve ever done for love. Being in a long-distance relationship is already challenging enough and ours was back in the 1990s — before mobile phones, email and other kinds of technology were popular. We would schedule phone calls and send letters via snail mail the old-fashioned way. Nowadays, there are mobile phones, texting, FaceTime, Skype, Whatsapp, Viber, Facebook, and all methods of communication. I wouldn’t have had it any other way though — the distance and limited ways to bridge the gap just made the heart grow fonder.

I flew to Barcelona to try to save a relationship that turned out to be the end anyway. Gotta give it one big push first before you let it go.

I would do anything and everything for love. But the craziest thing I have done was fly to Hong Kong for a first date to watch an opera. With just a slight hint of love, I took the chance and flew to spend the weekend with this guy who seemed cool and exciting! Turns out I placed a winning bet and now, Dennis and I are married for more than 21 years! Love conquers all — even mates from opposite poles!

Maika Rivera, actor, gemologist and former international professional tennis player

Phone bill got up to P12,000 on international phone calls/text. Coolest thing I did for love? I’m not really the coolest person, but I cooked dinner for my special someone, which I thought was pretty cool.

Rachel Anne Wolfe-Spitaletta, former beauty queen/actress

There was a time in our relationship when we had broken up. I was so sad and thought of baking him my yummy banana bread recipe. So I guess you can say that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach because after tasting my banana bread he quickly called me and asked me out again. So I tell our kids now that my famous banana bread recipe brought your mom and dad back to falling in love again.
