Providence to hold 6th Int’l Workshop on Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery
Laparoscopic surgery, a technique that revolutionized surgical operations, started around 1901 when European obstetricians began inspecting the abdominal cavities of a pregnant woman in a procedure later called “koelioscopie.”
The German surgeon erichMuhe is now recognized to be the first to perform laparoscopic cholecystectomy in 1985.
Laparoscopic surgery uses advanced miniaturized cameras, fiberoptic light sources and high definition images. It is a commonly used procedure that is safer, faster, less painful and resulting in much shorter hospital stays for the patient.
The 6th International Workshop on Ad- vanced Laparoscopic Surgery will be conducted by FEU-NRMF and the Fellowship Consortium on Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery (FoCALS) on Aug. 3.
It will showcase the laparoscopic surgical capabilities in the country today.
Participants include renowned local laparoscopic surgeons and those from the Asia-Pacific.
Using minimally invasive surgical techniques, they will perform procedures that are deemed difficult and highly technical even with open surgery. The workshop will highlight these highly specialized surgeons’ dexterity, competence and experience.
The workshop venue will be at Providence Hospital, Quezon Avenue, Quezon City.
The hospital’s state of the art operating room facilities will be complimented by the live video feed and other technological resources to provide real time information and knowledge.
The event affirms FoCALS’s commitment to update laparoscopic surgeons and promote the procedure in the country.
This workshop also aims to show local advances made throughout the years.
Patient outcomes have now proven to be equal with those in the most advanced countries.
