2 more tropical cyclones seen to enter Phl

Up to two more tropical cyclones are expected to enter the country before the year ends, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.

PAGASA said that tropical cyclones in the last quarter of the year are usually strong and cross the country’s landmass.

A total of 13 cyclones have entered the Philippine area of responsibility so far this year.

Last year, a total of 15 cyclones visited the country, below the average 19 to 20 cyclones annually.

PAGASA attributed the lower number of cyclones entering the Philippines last year to the strong El Niño event, which has brought drought.

In December last year, cyclones Nona and Onyok dumped rains in many parts of the country.

Nona ( international name Melor) slammed parts of Luzon and the Visayas, leaving at least 41 people dead and damage amounting to P4.9 billion.

Onyok, on the other hand, brought heavy rains in Mindanao and the Visayas for several days.

Meanwhile, PAGASA said from January to April next year, the country will have none or only one cyclone each month.

One to two cyclones may enter the country in May 2017.

PAGASA deputy administrator Flaviana Hilario earlier warned the La Niña condition could bring above normal rainfall in some parts of the country, particularly the eastern side, until early next year.

40 shooting stars tomorrow

Stargazers can witness up to 40 shooting stars beginning tomorrow.

PAGASA said the annual Geminids meteor shower will be active from Dec. 4 to 17.

“Under a dark and cloudless sky, an average of 40 meteors per hour can be seen just after midnight of its peak activity,” PAGASA said.

“The peak activity is on the night of Dec. 14 until the early morning hours of Dec. 15.”
