McGregor gets boxing license, may fight M’weather
UFC superstar Conor McGregor successfully obtained boxing license in California Thursday, moving him a step closer to a superfight with unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr.
McGregor has been issued a boxing license in the state of California, according to his management team, with confirmation expected to come soon after from the California State Athletic Commission.
“He got a license today and a federal ID,” California State Athletic Commission executive officer Andy Foster confirmed with MMA Fighting.
com. “He’s a California boxer now.” The news came days after the UFC unceremoniously stripped McGregor of his 145- pound title, which he won less than 12 months ago, and named Jose Aldo the new champion. He remains the UFC lightweight champion.
Both McGregor and Mayweather have been teasing a super-fight via the media as of late, but no concrete plans have been made for them to box at this time, per sources.
Both fighters have spoken in the past of their desire to fight each other although the Irishman said in jest that he would demand $100 to face the American.
But according to a report, the Mayweather camp said McGregor getting licensed is nothing more than a “con game.”
“It’s a calculated effort to gain more fans,” said Mayweather Productions CEO Leonard Ellerbe. “He is under contract to the UFC and if he wanted to fight Floyd in a boxing match, he can’t because his (UFC) bosses wouldn’t allow that to happen.”
“He’s qualified ( as a boxer),” Foster said. “I’d love to see him fight in California. It just needs to be the right opponent. Certainly a high-level opponent. We’re happy to license him. We’re happy he’s a California fighter.”
The 28-year-old McGregor became the UFC’s first simultaneous twotime champion after beating Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 earlier this month to win the lightweight title.
