‘Please don’t eat the chickens’

-

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) staged a demonstration in Sta. Cruz, Manila yesterday to convince people not to eat chicken.

The PETA members were confined in a cage measuring one square meter. Signs around the cage read, “Relate to Chicken’s Fate. Try Vegan. PETA”.

The demonstration took place four days before the celebration of the Chinese New Year.

“This year is the Year of the Rooster or Chicken. Through our demonstration we are showing the maltreatment of chickens in the farms. They are placed inside small, tight cages where they do not have enough space to spread their wings,” said Jana Sevilla of PETA.

The animal rights group said chickens are genetically manipulated and dosed with antibiotics and other chemicals that make them grow so large in such a short period of time that many suffer from organ failure or become crippled under their own weight.

After six weeks in these conditions, they are roughly thrown into cages that are stacked on the back of a truck and then shipped through all types of weather to a slaughterhouse, PETA said.
