Mikey undergoes surgery; cop killed in mishap
CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga – Former congressman Juan Miguel “Mikey” Arroyo, who was injured in a road accident in Pampanga on Monday, underwent surgery yesterday.
“He had surgery at 2: 30 a.m.,” former president and now Pampanga second district Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said in a chance interview at Malacañang, where she attended the launch of the business and investment program of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations 2017, which the Philippines is hosting.
Arroyo refused to elaborate about her son’s condition, saying it would be known 24 hours after the accident.
Sources said Mikey, who sustained a head injury, was “up and about” after the surgery.
Police Officer 3 Alexander Villamin of the Central Luzon Public Safety Battalion died in the accident that also left Mikey’s companions injured.
Senior Superintendent Joel Consulta, Pampanga police director, said Mikey and his friend Edward Mendoza were in Toyota Hi-Lux driven by John Frederick Macaraeg on their way to Porac town when it collided with a Honda Civic (WEP-604) driven by Villamin along the megadike in Bacolor. The two vehicles were totally wrecked.
Villamin was on his way home from the Regional Training Service in Magalang town, where he gave a lecture, when the accident occurred. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Mother Teresa of Calcutta Hospital in San Fernando City.
Mikey, Mendoza and Macaraeg were brought to the same hospital, but Mikey was transferred to the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City.
Villamin’s widow filed charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide against Macaraeg.
