Gov’t workers indolent – Rody

- By EDITH REGALADO

The government’s problem is indolence, which has caused the slow delivery of service that the people, especially victims of calamities, deserve.

President Duterte made the statement yesterday during his visit to New Hope Village, one of the housing projects for the victims of Super Typhoon Yolanda in Tacloban City, which was ravaged in November 2013.

“Tamad ( lazy). Talk about government, the problem of government is indolence. And the problem with the people in government is taking the interest of the people for granted,”

the President said in a speech before the residents of New Hope Village.

Duterte also said he does not mind being considered a dictator in ordering everyone to work and render the required hours mandated by law.

He vowed that there would be changes, he would adopt zero- tolerance and there would be no second chance for those sticking to their indolent ways in government.

“If hindi kaya (if you can’t), get out of government,” he said.

“I am particularly addressing those government workers who go out for lunch break and do not come back to their offices later in the afternoon when they are supposed to work for eight hours. Some of the government workers go to malls instead of returning to work.

“Yo u are paid (for) eight hours ( of work). If you do not go back to office in the afternoon, you are shortchanging, swindling government of what it is paying you. You do not get into government just to milk government. And if you are dismissed from work, you are welcome to file charges against me,” he added.

Duterte also said he would resign as President if he could not carry out the duties expected of him.

The President urged the Civil Service Commission to help in making sure that government workers render the mandated hours of service.

He warned that pertinent administrative charges would be filed against government employees found guilty of dereliction of duty.

The President gave department heads 30 days to work on issuance of permits or related concerns, 15 days to directors and three to four days in the city or municipal levels to issue the necessary permits.
