Brenan Espartinez: The prodigy comes of age

- — Tinnie Esguerra

Brenan Espartinez (photo) has come a long way since his early years as a child prodigy. Under the tutelage of renowned composer and OPM stalwart Ryan Cayabyab, he was one of the mainstays of Kaya, a singing group comprised of equally prodigious youngsters.

After winning first runner-up on GMA 7’s Pinoy Pop Superstar Season 1 last 2005, the Kapuso artist became a mainstay of the Sunday variety noontime show, SOP, and has since appeared in virtually all of the network’s regular programs.

Aside from his local awards, he also bagged the gold medal during the 10th Annual World Championship of Performing Arts

(WCOPA) in Hollywood, USA in 2006.

With his extensive musical experience, Brenan has become more aware of his mission in the local entertainment landscape. Despite having started off in the shadows of noted foreign R&B stalwarts, he acknowledges the importance of finding his unique identity and being one of the next-generation keepers of the OMO

(Original Music Only) torch. Thanks to his collaborations with King of R&B Jay-R and his HomeWorkZ Music label, Brenan has been getting his much-needed push in getting his original music heard by a wider audience.

He says, “Creating new music is extremely important because I see it as one of the best ways to breathe new life to our local music industry. Putting out more great quality original music would really help revive the interest and support for local music.”

Backed up by his current band, Sub Projekt, Brenan has been actively touring with HomeWorkZ as part of its Original Music Only concert tours both here and abroad, and admits to being blown away by the massive support shown by their Pinoy audiences wherever they perform.

“I think it is a great way to showcase what our local artists/songwriters/musicians are made of. There are no boundaries since all styles and genres are welcome. Every artist on the tour bring their own distinct sound and flavor. Those who watch get to witness how rich and diverse this generation’s artistry is,” he exclaims.

With HomeWorkZ as their new musical playground, expect Brenan and his band to explore more fertile musical terrain in the coming months.

“Me and my band Sub Projekt are aiming to record and release more songs. We are also looking forward to do collabs with other HomeWorkZ artists,” he assures his fans.
