Pacman to get bigger purse in Horn rematch

- By ABAC CORDERO

As far as Bob Arum is concerned, there’s no better deal for Manny Pacquiao than a rematch with Jeff Horn in Brisbane on Nov. 12.

Arum said Pacquiao can make more money in the rematch than when he did the first time he faced the former schoolteacher last July 2 at the Suncorp Stadium.

Pacquiao was reportedly guaranteed $10 million for the Horn fight last month and got a little more from other revenues, including the massive ticket sales of over 51,000.

“Manny had a guarantee and got a percentage as well so if you’re right and the fight does a lot better this time then he’ll make a lot more money,” Arum told The STAR.

Horn, under the contract, got $500,000 for the first fight and now that he’s the WBO welterweight champion stands to receive $2 million if the rematch happens in November.

The Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Graham Quirk, announced earlier this week that the deal is in place, and that they’ve got the assurance that Pacquiao is coming over to fight Horn in November.

In fact, Arum said he expects Pacquiao to sign the fight contract “sometime this week.”

“I talked to (Pacquiao adviser) Michael (Koncz) he’s going to talk to Manny. We’ll e-mail it (copy of the contract) to Manny so we could have it signed,” said Arum.

“Manny has to figure out when he could come to Brisbane for the press conference,” the chief of Top Rank Promotions said over the phone.

Everything seems to be in place until the Philippine Department of Tourism announced the other day that there are plans to stage the rematch in the Philippines. Arum was startled by the news. “This is all nonsense. “The contract with Horn and Duco (Events of Australia) is with Top Rank. And it has specific language,” he said.

“It just can’t happen. Period. It can’t happen,” Arum said, adding that Horn is not inclined on coming over to the Philippines to fight.

“Manny can say, ‘Okay, I’m not doing the rematch.’ Then Horn will fight somebody else in Australia and tell Manny, ‘See you next year.’ But if he (Pacquiao) wants to do the rematch and do it this year it has to be in Brisbane,” Arum stressed.

Besides, it’s in the contract that if a rematch happens, it should take place in Australia.
