The UAAP will fete some of the sports greats from each member university to highlight the opening of its 80th season on Sept. 9 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

In a briefing, Rowena Capulong Reyes, manager for marketing and communication of host Far Eastern University, said 10 greats from all universities will be honored during the kick-off rites that begins 12 noon.

The 10 legends, she added, will be picked by their own schools and will feature in a “Wall of Greats” set up for the occasion.

“We want to give recognition to the greats,” Capulong Reyes said.

The UAAP has a deep pool of heroes to choose from as it consistently produces heroes and heroines for the Philippine team, from basketball to track and field, baseball and other sports.

The season’s theme is “Go for Great” which according to Capulong Reyes, is aimed to serve as “the driving force for everyone to be legendary” and to provide “inspiration, dynamism and energy.”

The opening rites will feature the usual parade of athletes with a streetdance presentation as entertainment.

Hostilities start at 2 p.m. with University of the East and National U hitting the court first followed by the duel between last year’s runner-up Ateneo and Season 79 semifinalist Adamson at 4 p.m.

Capulong Reyes also announced the appointment of Rebo Saguisag to the newly created position of UAAP executive director. Saguisag will concurrently serve as basketball commissioner.
