Elite make major trade, step up bid vs Kia

-

Blackwater has traded Art dela Cruz and Raymond Aguilar for Barangay Ginebra’s swing man Chris Ellis and banger Dave Marcelo as it tries to bolster its quarterfinal drive against winless KIA in the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo, Rizal today.

Blackwater governor Silliman Sy yesterday confirmed the deal, saying they have added Raymond Aguilar to the trade deal, which he said would benefit both the Kings and the Elite.

“It’s a win-win arrangement. Dave Marcelo and Chris Ellis can get their playing time while Art dela Cruz will be reunited with his dad (Art) at Ginebra,” Sy told The STAR.

While he rued parting ways with his former wards, Ginebra coach Tim Cone agreed that the trade would be to the advantage of both teams.

“The hardest part of coaching is making difficult decisions but we felt this trade was good for both the team and the two players we traded away,” said Cone. “Chris will have a chance to go to Blackwater and really spread his wings and realize his potential. His athleticism is what Blackwater seemingly needs. We really expect him to really soar there.”

As for Marcelo, Cone said the former San Beda ace’s role has significantly change upon the return of Greg Slaughter. “But with Blackwater, he should continue to get significant playing time. In the meantime, because of our depth, we have the luxury of waiting for Art’s injury to heal and looking to the future,” said Cone.

The PBA Commissioner’ s Office approved the trade later in the day, paving the way for Ellis and Marcelo’s stint with the Elite against the Picanto at 4:15 p.m. today.
