Portraits of ilocano artists at SM city rosales
Located on the northwestern tip of Luzon, the Ilocos Region consists of four provinces: Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur. And the region will dazzle you with its mix of natural beauty, history and innovation.
The people of the Ilocos region are resourceful and industrious, their resilience probably stemming from their geographical location and extreme weather patterns. With this comes an innovative spirit that has led to a gold standard not only in their business, but also in their artistic pursuits.
As it continues its cultural journey around the Philippines, My City, My SM, My Art will give mallgoers a glimpse of the works of generations of artists from the Ilocos Region in an exhibit at SM City Rosales slated from Sept. 8 to 14.
The highlight of the event will be a tribute to Juan Luna, who is considered one of the greatest artists in Philippine history. Born in Badoc, Ilocos Norte, he was a major player in the Philippine Revolution in the 19th century, with his magnificent works sparking nationalism and pride among Filipinos.
It will also showcase the works of master artist Nestor Vinluan, who is considered the foremost abstractionist in modern-day Philippines. Born in Pozorrubio, Pangasinan, he is an educator, as well as an artist whose education has only made him appreciate the rustic quality of his native town.
My City, My SM, My Art will also feature the works of Ricarte Puruganan one of the trailblazing Thirteen Moderns who hails from Ilocos Norte, as well as those of his son Victor, who like his father is pas-
sionate about art and life.
Pangasinan artists take the spotlight in the exhibit: sculptors Joe Datuin and Pope Dalisay, as well as members of Biskeg Pangasinan, a group of artists committed to promote and uplift artistry in the province.
Mallgoers will also get to know more about La Union’s surprisingly vibrant art scene during the event through the works of Alger Guevarra, Valen Valero, Ric Ico, Rodel Rillera, and the Artist Guild of La Union.
A celebration of Philippine visual arts — painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and filmmaking — My City, My SM, My Art is a joint project of SM, the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, Shell Companies of the Philippines, and the
Philippine STAR with support from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and Centerstage Productions.
My City, My SM, My Art brings art and people together by showcasing the works of masters, modernists, and millennials around SM Supermalls. Advocating art for all, the team works with communities to mount exhibits, workshops and contests in key cities around the Philippines.
