Smart cities: Manila 148th of 180

Manila ranked 148th in the survey of most livable or “smartest” cities in the world published by Spain-based University of Navarra’s IESE Business School.

The 2017 Cities in Motion Index (CIMI) rated 180 cities in 80 countries based on these parameters: governance, urban planning, public management, technology, environmen­t, internatio­nal impact, social cohesion, transporta­tion, human

capital and economy.

Manila ranked 174th in transporta­tion, 160th in governance, 147th in environmen­t, 145th in urban planning, 140th in social cohesion, 139th in human capital, 131st in economy and 103rd in technology.

The Philippine­s’ capital fared relatively better in the areas of public management (57th) and internatio­nal impact (68th).

Manila lagged behind island city-state Singapore (22nd); Bangkok, Thailand (86th); Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (92nd) and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (146th).

Seoul led the ranking in the Asia-Pacific region, followed by Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taipei.

The top 10 most livable cities in the world are New York, Boston, San Francisco and Washington in the US, London in the United Kingdom, Paris in France, Seoul in South Korea, Tokyo in Japan, Berlin in Germany and Amsterdam in the Netherland­s.

Amsterdam ranked first in urban planning and is among the highest-ranking in almost all the indicators, the report said. Taipei, meanwhile, ranked first in the area of technology.

The CIMI, now on its fourth year, enables the strengths and weaknesses of each city to be identified.
