Teachers silent heroes – Robredo

Vice President Leni Robredo honored yesterday Filipino teachers who have made sacrifices for their students.

“Teachers are our silent heroes so we should honor them,” Robredo said in her weekly program BISErbisyo­ng Leni over dzXL.

“When I was a congresswo­man, I met so many hero teachers. Those who spent much of their time to work, those who have families to look after but still priotize school, those who spend their own money to help their school and students,” she said.

Robredo served as representa­tive of Camarines Sur for one term before winning the vice presidency last year.

The Philippine­s, led by the Department of Education, celebrates the National Teacher’s Month from Sept. 5 to Oct. 5, which is World Teacher’s Day.

Robredo said she worked as a teacher for 10 years while she was studying law.

She said her mother, who is 81 years old, still teaches.

PLDT-Smart Foundation, through its Gabay Guro project, paid tribute to 20,000 teachers from public and private schools at a gathering at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay yesterday.

Now on its 10th year, Gabay Guro has over 1,200 scholars in 52 partner state colleges and universiti­es nationwide.

It has also partnered with local government units to further teachers’ education.
