- – Louella Desiderio

The Light Rail Transit Authority is giving free rides to senior citizens on Oct. 8 in observance of Elderly Filipino Week.

Seniors citizens can avail themselves of free rides on LRT-1 the whole day on Sunday, the Light Rail Manila Corp. (LRMC) announced yesterday.

The free rides will be available on all 20 stations of LRT-1, which runs from Baclaran in Parañaque to Roosevelt in Quezon City.

The first trip leaves at 4:30 a.m. The last northbound trip from Baclaran station departs at 9:30 p.m. and southbound trip leaves Roosevelt station at 9:45 p.m.

Senior citizens should present their Office for Senior Citizen Affairs identification card or any valid ID with their date of birth to get a single journey card.

Those with stored value cards should go to the onsite tellers for card activation to avoid fare deductions.

“This is an initiative of the LRMC and Senior Citizens party-list in honor of our country’s elders,” the LRMC, operator of the LRT, said.

The Elderly Week is celebrated during the first week of October in accordance with Presidential Proclamation 470 issued in 1994.

The LRMC, composed of Metro Pacific Investments Corp.’s Metro Pacific Light Rail Corp., Ayala Corp.’s AC Infrastructure Holdings Corp. and the Philippine Investment Alliance for Infrastructure’s Macquarie Infrastructure Holdings (Philippines) PTE Ltd., took over the LRT-1 operations in September 2015.
