HPG eyes half-faced helmets to curb crime

- Emmanuel Tupas

The Philippine National Police’s Highway Patrol Group (HPG) is pushing for an amendment of Republic Act 10054 or the Motorcycle Helmet Act to address killings perpetrated by motorcycleriding criminals.

HPG spokesperson Senior Inspector Jem Dellantes said yesterday they have submitted a proposal to the House of Representatives requiring riders of motorcycles below 400cc to wear half-faced helmets.

“If they will wear half-faced helmets, we can easily see the face of the driver,” Dellantes said in a press briefing.

Riders using big motorcycles can still use full-faced helmets as most of those involved in riding-in-tandem killings use motorbikes below 400cc.

“Hopefully, they will consider the position paper submitted by the HPG,” said Dellantes.

PNP chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa vowed to eradicate motorcycle-riding criminals, which he said put the entire police force in a bad light. –
