Malaysia reigns in Asean Senior Amateur golf

Malaysia sealed its dominance in the 34th Asean Senior Amateur Golf Championsh­ips by lifting the Lela Pahlawan Trophy as the tourney’s new overall champion Friday.

The Malaysians, piled up 56 points from the seven different categories played in the three-day tournament, to beat Thailand (55) and host Philippine­s (50) for the No. 1 standing in the fivecountr­y event hosted by the Federation of Philippine Amateur Senior Golfers, Inc.

Malaysia made heavy gains from its six-stroke triumph in the centerpiec­e Stroke Play Team Gross (702) over deposed champ Phl (708) with Individual Gross ruler Idris Ngah (219) leading the Malaysian onslaught against hometown bets Eddy Manzanares, Eduardo Sison, Edgar Quiao and Rodel Mangulabna­n.

The Malaysians annexed the Stroke Play Team Net diadem (638) and topped the Stableford Play Team Net hostilitie­s with 580 points with Dato’ Tan Seng Chee (76) winning Group E.

Host Phl shone in other fronts with Gen. Don Montenegro copping the Stroke Play Individual Net (207) and Marieto Valerio (80 points) pocketing the Stableford Age-Group title.

Also ruling their respective agegroups for the home country were Stableford competitor­s Glicerio Sua (Group D, 78 points), Efren Cruz (Group C, 78 points) and Edgardo Rene Samonte (Group A, 77 points).
