THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS

Rajo Laurel looks back at the idylls of his childhood for his newest Holiday 2017 collection.

- By MARTIN YAMBAO

The holidays are never to be taken lightly at chez Rajo Laurel. The season’s task always falls on updating the “ever green” lineup of fete-ready classics in modern and unexpected ways.

For Rajo Laurel, it always goes back to his muse: what she needs, where she’s going, and ultimately, what she’s wearing — it’s either she’s the toast of someone else’s party or she’s throwing one herself. Considering this season’s woman and her need for either occasion, Rajo Laurel delivers a considerable festive wardrobe for Holiday 2017.

Always inspired by the feminine strength of the matriarchs in his family, the designer goes back to the idylls of his childhood, mining his childhood whimsies for the perfect festive mood. Titled “When I Was 5,” he describes the collection as “turning an ephemeral feeling of magic and wonder into timeless pieces.” It’s a vision painted in tinsel-trimmed brocades, a bottle green for every bright or a deep blissful plum for every jewel tone, ribbons and ruffles, flounces and tulles

We see a lot of viable holiday options here: flounced taffeta separates in the brightest of hues; smart tailored jackets detailed with bugles and embroidered patches; sashed gazaar gowns in waisted silhouettes and so much more. Our top pick? A crepe cutaway sheathe in the most festive of Christmas reds, secured at the chest by a ribbon detail — lowkey enough for most holiday parties but still formal enough for something dress-to-impress.
