“It’s a good story if it’s The Manila Hotel,” once said Ernest Hemingway, an American novelist, short story writer and journalist. Built in 1912, The Manila Hotel or referred to as the “Grand Dame,” is known for its grandeur and rich history. And after 105 years, the hotel’s story continues to progress and prosper.

Defined by its rich history, structure and impeccable ser- vice, The Manila Hotel remains the hotel of choice by the most discerning clientele as it continuously provides the most gracious of service and amenities for a truly memorable experience.

A nostalgic walk down memory lane

History begins at the grand lobby where many of Manila’s renowned personalities, foreign dignitaries, politicians, kings and queens and entertainment icons have walked amidst the graceful row of white columns that spread across the vast marble floors, complemented by the magnificent chandeliers hanging from the remarkable wood carved ceiling.

And throughout the years, people have created wonderful memories at the Manila Hotel as they celebrate life’s milestone events such as weddings, anniversaries, debuts and birthdays held at the hotel’s various historic function rooms, namely the marvelous and expansive Fiesta Pavilion, the elegant and illustrious Maynila and the distinguished Centennial Hall. Thus, The Manila Hotel has become a significant part of people’s lives, an endearing part of their own personal history.

To date, The Manila Hotel has remained a preferred venue with its classic charm and ethereal beauty that make it iconic. And like tradition, multi-generations continue to celebrate milestone events at the Grand Dame.

Well-appointed guestrooms

In 2008, the hotel underwent a series of renovations in time for its grand centennial celebration in October 2012. The hotel’s guestrooms were fully refurbished with modern facilities and amenities. The guestrooms exude refined elegance that also highlights the Filipino’s outstanding design and intricate artistry. The rooms are made even more spectacular with huge windows framed by wooden lattice work, which also provide picture perfect views of the city and the fabled Manila Bay.

The legendary MacArthur Suite

One of the things that The Manila Hotel is known is for is its legendary MacArthur Suite named after Gen. Douglas MacArthur, an American five-star general and field marshal of the Philippine Army. He also served as chief of staff of the United States Army during the 1930s.

During his tenure as the military advisor to the Commonwealth Government of the Philippines from 1935- 1941, he made The Manila Hotel his home. Architect Pedro Luna, son of master painter Juan Luna, was commissioned to construct a penthouse suite for the general and his family situated atop the fifth floor of the hotel.

The MacArthur Suite has been stylishly refurbished, featuring fine bedroom drapes and custom-designed bedding with intricate hand-embroidered jusi. With its ample arched windows, the sun filters through creating a golden glow that enhances the ivory paneled walls. The beautiful antique furniture is a sight to behold. Slip-covered sofas and lounge chairs have been added for a relaxing and genteel ambience.

This beautiful suite has a master’s bedroom with a dressing room, one guest room, two bathrooms and one powder room, a study room, formal dining room overlooking the bay, a well-equipped kitchen and a balcony with a spectacular view of the Manila Bay and its fabled Manila sunset.
