ALL THAT GLITTERS

Janina Dizon celebrates 10 years of fine jewelry, a ‘Dekada’ at her namesake label Janina for Jul Dizon.

- By MARTIN YAMBAO

T

his year marks a decade since Janina Dizon, third-generation jewelry designer, set herself apart from the family business. Daughter to celebrated fine jeweler Jul Dizon, Janina joined her mother’s company in 1991, eventually breaking away and putting up her own shop in 2007.

Quizzed on what sets her apart from the Jul Dizon half of Janina for Jul Dizon, the designer shares, “It simply comes down to a difference in aesthetics. Our tastes are different! My priority in setting up shop was to have my mom’s blessing, that’s why I opened up right next to her at the Peninsula Hotel Manila.”

Ten years since she set out to become a purveyor of fine jewelry in her own right, Janina has established an aesthetic all her own; referencing Asian traditions in one collection, mining shapes from estate finds in another, turning exotic materials such as croc leather and shagrene into an iconic signature one moment, taking inspiration from American sculptor Alex Calder the next — the mélange is an opulent mix of East meets West in playful combinations of silver and gold, lush pearls and drops of beaded gemstones. The permutations are infinite. And for Janina Dizon, the devil is always in the details.

Available starting today at Janina for Jul Dizon shop at The Peninsula Manila Hotel, YStyle walks you through Dekada, celebrating 10 years diffused into 10 different collections.
