Tierro, Patrombon gain PCA Open 3rd round

- – Olmin Leyba

Reigning champ Patrick John Tierro and top seed Jeson Patrombon repulsed their rivals in contrasting fashions to move into the third round of the 36th Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) Open men’s singles at the PCA indoor shell-clay courts in Paco, Manila yesterday.

Tierro, 32, recovered from a second set struggle with a dominant third set win as he eased out Kyle Parpan, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, while Patrombon rolled past Calvin Canlas, 6-2, 6-3.

“I need to stay focused and be in tip-top shape,” said Patrombon, fresh from stints in the ITF Futures tournament in Hong Kong, China and India.

Tierro also vowed to toughen up in the succeeding games, including his next match against John Altiche, who beat Ernesto Pantua, 6-3, 6-2.

“I hope to play better in the next game,” said Tierro, who lost to young AJ Lim in 2015 final but bested veteran and fellow Davis Cupper Johnny Arcilla last year.

He will next face Betto Orendain, who held off Marcen Gonzales, 7-6 (4), 6-3.

Arcilla, an eight-time champion, ITF juniors campaigner John Bryan Otico, No. 6 Elbert Anasta and No. 8 Fil-Italian Marc Reyes also hurdled their respective rivals to stay in the hunt in the event backed by The Philippine

STar, Asian Traders Dunlop, Pearl Garden Hotel, Babolat, Tyrecorp Inc., PVL Restaurant, Greenfield Marketers One, Mary Grace Foods Inc., Coca-Cola Philippines-FEMSA, Kraut Art Glass, Manuel Misa and Atty. Antonio Cablitas.
