Super Cars among Super Heroes

-

THERE is nothing like a good super hero movie to get avid movie-goers and comic book fans out. But a good super hero movie with good cars? THAT draws a larger crowd.

Justice League movie was out in the theaters last week, and exclusive screenings were held by some prestigious automobile companies.

Thursday night, Auto Nation Group (the exclusive distributor of Mercedes Benz in the Philippines) held a block screening in Powerplant Cinema, Makati.

In one scene, The Flash gets inside a car with Bruce Wayne and asks, “What’s your superpower again?” Bruce Wayne replies: “I’m rich.” The two then ride off in Wayne’s sleek Mercedes AMG Vision Gran Turismo with gullwing doors. The imposing front grill bears the Mercedes Benz, not the Batman, logo. With that kind of car, Batman could have easily claimed another super power—that of being super stylish.

Not to be outdone, Wonder Woman is later seen driving a Mercedes-Benz E-Class Convertible.

Unfortunately, the Mercedes-Benz cars driven by Bruce Wayne is a one-of-a-kind concept car.

Saturday morning, I went to see Justice League again. This time at the IMAX 3D cinema of SM Aura in a viewing hosted by The Covenant Car Company, Inc. (the exclusive distributor of Chevrolet in the Philippines). Instead of trailers prior to the movie, the audience was treated to a video showing the evolution of Chevy Trucks throughout the years. While not as obvious as the Mercedes-Benz, the Chevy truck also fits into the Justice League movie.

As a Russian family flees their home to escape the villains of Justice League, the father carries his two children into the back of a pickup truck. The pickup drives the whole family safely away from the Parademons (or winged monsters). Martha Kent (Clark Kent’s mother) also drives a pickup truck in the movie.

There is a beautiful contrast between the pickup trucks of the Russian father and Martha Kent, vis-a-vis the MercedesBenz cars of Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince. While the pickup trucks are not flashy, their super powers lie in its practicality and reliability. While the two-door Mercedes-Benz cars were the vehicles of choice of bachelor Batman and bachelorette Wonder Woman, the pickup trucks were the partners of Justice League characters who led family lives.

In a movie filled with iconic super heroes such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg, it takes a lot of star power for vehicles to be noticed along their side. But that is what Mercedes Benz’s cars and the pickup trucks managed to accomplish in Justice League—among the super heroes, these super cars proved to be just as significant on a league of their own.
