SBC, Letran booters notch 2nd win in row

- – Joey Villar

Defending champion San Beda rode on Mariano Suba Jr.’s sizzling seven-goal feat as it routed Lyceum of the Phl U, 10-0, to nail its second straight victory in the juniors’ division of the 93rd NCAA football tournament at the Rizal Memorial grounds Wednesday night.

Suba opened things up with a quick goal on the third minute and after teammate Samuel Reuben Chavez headed one home to make it 2-0, the former followed it up with two more rockets in a 10-minute span starting on the 29th minute to go into the halftime break with a four-goal lead.

But he was far from being finished as Suba unloaded four of the Junior Red Booters’ six second half goals to cap the lopsided duel.

The Taytay-based school also demolished Perpetual Help, 6-0, last Monday.

Letran also notched its second win in a row with a 3-0 romp over Perpetual Help.

Nikko Palacio had a brace while Agustin Rafael Roa chipped in a goal in the first half before the Squires, who edged the Emilio Aguinaldo Brigadiers, 2-1, also Monday, held sway to clinch the victory.

St. Benilde-La Salle Greenhills broke a 1-1 all count in the first half by firing four goals late to fashion out a 5-1 win over a luckless EAC.

After CSB-LSGH’s’ Vin dela Cruz and EAC’s Michael Gultiano traded goals on the 27th and 33rd minute, Loyd Solo struck with three of his team’s final four goals in the last 22 minutes to snatch the triumph.

Jethro Borlongan accounted for the Junior Blazers’ other late goals.

Meanwhile, action resumes on Monday with Arellano U battling Mapua at 2 p.m., EAC tackling Perpetual Help at 4 p.m. and LPU squaring off with St. Benilde in the seniors’ division while Letran will play LPU at 2 p.m., CSB-LSGH will tangle with AU at 4 p.m. and Perpetual Help will face EAC at 6 p.m. in Tuesday’s juniors’ competition.
