Malditas mount W Cup bid in AFC

- By OLMIN LEYBA

The Philippine Malditas will launch a serious bid to qualify for the 2019 Fifa Women’s World Cup by putting up an outstanding performance in next year’s AFC Women’s Asian Cup in Jordan.

The Malditas look to reach the semifinals or at least finish fifth best among the eight teams in the Asian meet to nail a historic trip to the France WC.

Officials feel Phl XI got a bit of break when it got host Jordan, eight-time winner China and Southeast Asian rival Thailand as bracket-mates in Group A during Saturday night’s draw. Defending champion Japan, top-ranked Australia, Korea Republic and Vietnam make up Group B.

“We are happy with the outcome of the draw and look forward to the opportunity to bring honor to our country. We call on all true supporters of Philippine Football to come together to help make the World Cup Qualification a reality,” said Philippine Football Federation president Nonong Araneta.

“In 2010, the Miracle in Hanoi brought us all together to support the men’s national team (Azkals). Now is the time for women’s football to take us to the next level,” he added.

To prepare for this major undertaking, the Malditas are set to hold a US training camp from Dec. 27-Jan. 10.

“The mission of the Malditas is very clear to make ‘herstory’ – One win and one draw and we go to France,” said coach Ernie Nierras.

“We see light and hope to make the next round. But again, it’s not going to be an easy journey. It never will. Proper preparation is crucial here. We cannot wait!” said co-captain Inna Palacios.
