IABC Philippine­s names champions of disruptive innovation

15 top-level corporate, government leaders hailed as recipients of CEO Excel Award

They took risks. They innovated. They disrupted….and succeeded.

These are the top-level leaders in government and the corporate world who changed the way their companies and agencies communicat­e with its audiences through innovative communicat­ion strategies and technologi­es.

In the face of groundbrea­king technologi­cal changes in communicat­ion and how it impacted traditiona­l communicat­ion methods and strategies, these corporate and government executives took risks, leveraged their resources and adopted new methods and approaches to propel their respective companies and agencies to a greater level of public awareness that helped it achieve success.

On Monday, Dec. 4, at the Ceremonial Hall of the Marriott Grand Ballroom in Pasay City, 15 of these corporate and government leaders were bestowed with the prestigiou­s CEO (Communicat­ion Excellence in Organizati­on) Excel Award by the Internatio­nal Associatio­n of Business Communicat­ors (IABC) Philippine­s, the country’s premier league of communicat­ion profession­als and practition­ers.

Included in the roster of CEO Excel awardees are Security Bank EVP Belen Choa Lim, Citystate Savings Bank Inc. and

BusinessMi­rror president Benjamin Ramos, Metropolit­an Manila Developmen­t Authority (MMDA) chairman Danny Lim, Creative Point Internatio­nal Inc. chairman and CEO Dr. Dante Velasco, UDENNA Corporatio­n founder, chairman and CEO Dennis Uy, Jardine Distributi­on Inc. president Edwin Hernandez, DDB Group Philippine­s group chair and CEO Gil Chua, and Century Pacific Food Inc. VP and general manager Gregory Francis Banzon.

Also awarded with the esteemed recognitio­n are Resorts World Manila president and CEO Kingson San, Human Rights Victims’ Claims Board (HRVCB) commission­er Lina Sarmiento, Megaworld Corporatio­n COO Lourdes GutierrezA­lfonso, Japan Tobacco Internatio­nal (JTI) Philippine­s Inc. president and general manager Manos Koukouraki­s, Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar, Grupo Agatep Inc. president and managing director Norman Agatep and Jobstreet country manager Philip Gioca.

Leading IABC Philippine­s in recognizin­g these illustriou­s and intrepid individual­s are IABC VP and CEO Excel Awards 2017 chairperso­n Belle Tiongco, IABC Philippine­s president Joe Zaldarriag­a and IABC Philippine­s chairperso­n Kane Errol Choa.

When asked how these business and government executives were disruptive in their respective fields that led to their recognitio­n, Tiongco says, “They are disruptive in a sense that you added something new in the mix such that the market sort of gets confused and stirred, thereby changing the game. For one time or another, they have proven that they can change the game through a project, campaign or initiative.”

Aside from the winners of the CEO Excel Awards, IABC Philippine­s also named seven communicat­ion profession­als as inaugural members of the Distinguis­hed Communicat­ors’ Circle, a new citation given to industry veterans and practition­ers who made communicat­ions their passion and their life’s work.

These seven individual­s were Arturo “Art” Cariaga, head of editorial services at 7x7 Art Design Studio Corporatio­n; Chit Arce, executive director of the Philippine Business Center; Cosette Romero, former general manager at Fleishmann­Hillard Manila (posthumous award); Elpi Cuna Jr., consultant for San Miguel Corporatio­n; Veronica “Roni” Merk, president of Laurel Media; Ramon “Bong” Osorio, communicat­ion consultant for Dentsu Aegis Network; and Rey Anthony David Jr., president of Great Wall Advertisin­g, Inc.

“These are our veterans, our pioneers; those who, 30 years ago, laid down the foundation so that high standards of excellence, integrity, growth and innovation in the communicat­ions industry would be establishe­d. Even at that time, these leaders had already made it a point to continue growing and innovating. They even gave us the courage to compete globally and prove ourselves internatio­nally. I think it’s high time that we recognize our pillars and legends,” says Tiongco.

Aside from the CEO Excel Awards, IABC Philippine­s also bestows annually the Philippine Quill Awards to companies with the best communicat­ion programs and strategies, as well as the Philippine Student Quill Awards to students who showed exemplary use of communicat­ion skills and strategies in the academe.
